Rowena
aged 44
ROWENA is an outgoing, communicative and independent single carer, with a good sense of humour. Her personality is warm, friendly and caring towards others. Rowena is always lending support and a helping hand to those around her.
Rowena’s lifestyle is active. She often goes for holidays in her property abroad, where she enjoys walking, cycling and skiing.
She is an energetic woman who enjoys socialising and travelling. Rowena takes pleasure in cooking healthy foods, and is in good physical and emotional health, seldom visiting her GP. She really promotes her well-being and often meets with the wide circle of friends that she has had since her school days.
These friends, as well as Rowena’s family, will be part of her support network, and they all live close by. She is able to work from home following adoption leave, as she is aware that the child or children she adopts may need more time with her.
Whilst Rowena has not had any direct parenting experience, she has had experience of looking after her nieces, although this has mainly been since they were older. She also worked as a counsellor at the Y Camp in the USA, from 1994 until 1997, where she gained insight into some issues relating to adolescence. Rowena has been very clear that she will use her own experience of being parented, with the aim of creating a home where there is traditional support and stability. She feels that her own education will help her to support and understand a child who needs extra help in mainstream school.
Rowena’s home is situated in a predominantly white British area, and is three miles outside of a major city centre in north-west England. It is near a motorway network and public transport. The area has several good schools, various shopping centres, a hospital and GP practice. In close proximity are large parks, a bowling alley, cinema, swimming baths and a library. Rowena owns a car.
Rowena’s house is a three-bedroomed, semi-detached property with a large lounge, dining room, kitchen and study. It has a large garden to the front and rear of the property, with lots of space for a child to play in. The child placed with her will have their own bedroom. Rowena lives in the house with some tropical fish!
Rowena would describe herself as a person who embraces her Jewish culture, with regards to being family-orientated, warm and nurturing, but is non-practising. Her culture has provided her with love and stability, which she feels has given her a ‘firm foundation’ and a positive model of parenting. Rowena attends synagogue once a year in respect for her parents. She would provide a child with an understanding of some Jewish celebrations as well as other Christian festivals, such as Christmas and Easter.
Rowena would consider a child from a range of backgrounds, including those of neglect and abuse, and where their parents have a history of substance misuse. She is also willing to consider a child who has one parent with a history of severe mental illness.
Ethnic and cultural descent: white British
Approval status: approved as an adopter, with a recommendation that Rowena would be particularly suited to care for one or two children of either gender, aged up to five years; Rowena feels able to facilitate direct contact with birth parents and siblings, as she has an understanding of the need for a child to retain their links with their birth family
Area: north-west England
