Technical requirements

Size: Ideally around 3 Mb, but no more than 10 Mb
Format: MP3
Length: No more than three minutes

Top tips

  • Be aware of background noises such as from television, radio, music or passing traffic.
  • Ideally try to use an external microphone. If using an internal microphone, make sure that the child, or whoever is speaking, is close enough.
  • Avoid having more than one person talking at the same time.
  • Avoid any identifying features, such as use of full names, addresses, town of residence.
  • You can include quotes/interviews with the child, their foster carer, their social worker, their teacher, etc.
  • Put quotes into context, e.g. “I am Shane’s foster carer, Mary. Here is Shane talking for a few minutes about his favourite hobbies…”
  • Let the child speak for him or herself without prompting.
